My idea of a fairy tale certainly isn’t living in a castle in some far off land. My fairy tale is right here and right now. You are the creator of your own destiny. Lead yourself into a life as amazing as you want it to be!
Today’s post comes to you from our very own back yard. The warmer weather is coming and we couldn’t be more excited! Each day that the temperature presents itself to be tolerable it seems as though our family can’t get outside fast enough! Between yard work, bike rides, and walks to the park, it seems as though we have 100 excuses to get out of the house.. As a photographer, this weather also gives me so many excuses to get even more pictures of the kids as they play. That is a part that REALLY excites me! I consider myself to be very lucky in the way that I will have no shortage of pictures of the kids as they grow up because my hard drive is just full of them. I love photography and having some very cute subjects at my disposable is a great way for me to feed my passion.
I would like you to take a close look at this picture while paying special attention to Jaeden’s smile. Now, take a moment to think about the last time that you had one of those “Laughing straight from the belly” laughs and how AMAZING it made you feel. I once heard somewhere that as we get older, we are less likely to laugh throughout the day. Is that not the worst thing that you have ever heard? I think that there are many reasons as to why children are considered blessings and I can tell you that keeping us laughing would be one of them…. If this old=serious statistic is true, then I am going to consider having a houseful of children JUST so that I can join in on their laughter each and every day. There is no need for us to let the daily grind get us down so low that we don’t want to laugh any more! Life is for living, so live it to the fullest! Find those things that make you happy and force yourself to fit them into your daily routine! This is something that I am just starting to do for myself and I am at a point where I am wondering why I didn’t do it sooner! There is always going to be a nagging feeling that there are more important things to be done, but really, that is not true. You ARE a priority, so reward yourself with the happiness that you so deserve! And the next time that you have the urge to laugh the most boisterous laugh that you have ever heard, just do it! You never know, it just might be the thing that keeps you young!
This is a picture that just kind of happened…
Friday was a day when both kids were home and I had a friend coming over for a photoshoot. Initially the kids were kept entertained by doing their own thing and they stayed out of the way for the most part. Eventually though, Jaeden and John worked up their courage to come downstairs from their rooms to see who was here and what was going on. I think that it was inevitable that one of the kids ended up being in a picture because they just couldn’t leave my friend Dave alone…
Dave being the easy going guy that he is, just rolled with it and that opened up the opportunity for a picture like this to happen. Looking at the picture, I can think of a few ways in which it could have been better composed, but to be honest just catching this moment was good enough for me! John had come over to the backdrop and mimicked Dave all on his own. I was presented with a “Shoot first, Think Later” moment and I took it! I love how even kids add their own character to their pictures and that you can get some REALLY great shots if you just sit back and let things happen….

Normally I find myself posting portraits for my blog because they tend to be the pictures that I get the most feeling from. This time I wanted to post something a little different because it is just a picture that had to be shared. What you are looking at is a piece of artwork that my four year old daughter brought home from school last week. She was very eager to show me this one because she had been able to use pastels for the first time at JK. After congratulating her on creating a very nice design, I inquired about the phrase that I could see at the bottom left of the page. She was kind enough to read it out to me as “I love you, Neven.” Relatively surprised by the phrase, I chose to inquire further and asked her if she had told this to Neven at all.. She responded that she hadn’t, but assured me that she was going to make a point to tell him on her next day at school. At our house we do tend to use the “love” word quite frequently with our night time routines as well as when the kids do those things that make your heart just melt. That was the first time that I had ever heard her use it towards someone outside of the family, though! I can’t help but smile when I think about my little girl at school and the realization that she is now making her own choices. Whether it is what to do during free time, who to play with at recess, and who she even likes, or loves, in her classroom, she is choosing all on her own without any need for my direction. Being as she is the oldest, this is definately a new chapter for us and I have to say that I am quite excited for her. I can’t wait to see how her own experiences help her to grow into the person that she is meant to be.

I am sure that we have all had one of these moments, possibly even a few of them within the past few days. It is one of those moments where you catch yourself staring off into space at nothing in particular, just thinking about whatever has caught your attention.. As we grow older and life demands more of us I am sure that these thoughtful moments become a little more intense as we have a lot more to contemplate. I am sure that Autumn here isn’t worrying about the bills that she has to pay, or the issues at work that she has to deal with, but even at this young age there is something that has gotten her thinking. No matter what age we are, there will always be moments where we need to step back and give ourselves the time needed to think things through. Chances are that you won’t be finding the solution for all of your problems in this short break, but at least it will provide the opportunity to keep life in check. The world can be overwhelming at times, it is true. Giving ourselves a guilt-free moment every once in a while can be all that is needed to get over at least one of those hurdles in our way.
One thing that I really enjoy about the upcoming holiday is the opportunity it brings us to really enjoy all of the things that we have been blessed with in life. Looking at this picture, I can choose to see it in one of two different ways. The first way would be to look at it and obsess about the tiny imperfections that can be seen like the mess on John’s face, Jaeden’s shirt creeping up, or even the unruly hair that is trying to hide my baby girl’s face.. On the other hand though, I can look at this picture and reflect on all of the amazing things that we have been blessed with. We have a family that is full of fun and love, a house that keeps us comfortable and warm, and the means to provide ourselves with food to fill our bellies (and cover our cheeks apparently…) I can tell you that John’s face is usually covered with some sort of dirt, and Jaeden’s hair is often as unruly as you see in this picture, so in a way this picture very accurately represents our family.
When I look at this picture the first thing that I see is happiness, and I don’t ever want that view to change. I hope that you all get the opportunity to appreciate everything that you have in your life, because if we spend all of our time worrying about the imperfections then we are missing out on the many chances to REALLY live. Happy Holidays to you all, and I wish you an amazing New Year!
